Muay Thai shorts: cut, rise and sizing
Why Thai shorts are cut wide, how Thai sizing compares to US sizing, retro vs modern length, satin vs nylon, and how to stop them riding up.
Muay Thai shorts look the way they do for one reason: a high roundhouse needs your leg to travel through a full arc without the hem catching your thigh. Everything else — the wide leg, the short rise, the elastic waistband — follows from that.
Thai sizing is not US sizing
| US size | Waist | Typical Thai size |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 26–28" | S |
| S | 28–30" | M |
| M | 30–32" | L |
| L | 32–34" | XL |
| XL | 34–36" | XXL |
| XXL | 36–40" | 3XL / 4XL |
Brands made outside Thailand for the western market — including a lot of the house-line and US brands — usually size normally. Check the label origin, or just measure the waistband flat and double it.
Rise: where they sit
Traditional Thai shorts sit high, at or just above the navel. That's not a style choice — a high waistband stays put when you throw knees, where a low-rise short slides down and ends up being pulled up between every round.
Modern cuts sit lower, closer to where board shorts sit. They look more familiar and they do move around more. If you're new and they feel like they're sitting oddly high, give it three sessions before you decide.
Leg length and cut
| Cut | Length | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Retro | Very short, wide flare | Maximum kick clearance. The classic look. |
| Standard | Mid-thigh | What most brands ship. Good for everyone. |
| Long / modern | Above the knee | More coverage, slightly more hem catch on high kicks. |
The flare matters more than the length. A short that's long but cut wide will still let you kick head-height; a short that's mid-thigh but cut narrow won't.

- Satin — the traditional choice. Light, glossy, moves beautifully, and shows wear at the seams first. Most Thai brands.
- Nylon / poly — tougher, dries faster, less shine. Good if you train daily and wash constantly.
- Cotton-blend — softer and heavier, more of a casual or apparel-line fabric than a fight short.
Whichever you pick: cold wash, air dry. Satin in particular does not survive a hot dryer, and the elastic in the waistband goes long before the fabric does.
Common fit problems
- Riding up during knees — the rise is too low, or the waist is too big and you're relying on the drawstring.
- Hem catching on high kicks — the cut is too narrow, not too long.
- Waistband rolling — usually a size too small; the elastic is being stretched past its width.
- Fine standing, tight in guard — check the leg opening, not the waist. Thai cuts vary a lot here.
Can you just train in gym shorts?
For your first few weeks, yes — see the beginner kit list. But most gym shorts are cut narrow and land at the knee, which is the exact combination that catches on a roundhouse. It's the cheapest upgrade in the sport and you feel it immediately.
If the hem stops your kick, the shorts are wrong — not your kick.
Common questions
What size Muay Thai shorts should I order?
For Thai-made brands, order one size up from your US size — a US medium is usually a Thai L or XL. Brands manufactured for the western market generally size normally. When in doubt, measure a pair that fits, laid flat, and double the waistband.
Why are Muay Thai shorts so short and wide?
So a high roundhouse or knee can travel through its full range without the hem catching your thigh. The wide flare matters more than the actual length — a longer short cut wide still kicks fine.
Why do Muay Thai shorts have a high waist?
A high waistband stays in place when you throw knees. Low-rise shorts slide down and end up being pulled back up between every round. Traditional Thai shorts sit at or just above the navel for exactly this reason.
How do you wash Muay Thai shorts?
Cold machine wash and air dry. Satin shorts don't survive a hot dryer, and heat destroys the waistband elastic long before the fabric wears out.
